Connecting Talent to Opportunities in Aviation: Let’s Start the Conversation!
There is a quote that routinely circulates in leadership and mentorship circles: “Every big opportunity starts with a little conversation.” It is worth adding that conversations are truly transformative when those engaged in the discussion look outside the box and act inclusively of other perspectives.
When professionals seek a career aligned with their strengths and goals, are their skills mapped only to traditional career paths, or are unconventional opportunities considered as well?
Looking Beyond Traditional Career Paths
At the Airport Management Council of Ontario (AMCO), we consistently work to broaden the conversation around skills and career development to include the myriad opportunities in the aviation sector. Aviation is a future-focused industry offering meaningful work and a variety of career directions. Individuals with diverse strengths can easily find their niche and build a long-term career in an industry with robust networking and educational prospects.
The traditional career paths in aviation, such as pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers (AME), air traffic controllers, airport operators, and screening agents, are undoubtedly in demand and widely recognized as roles that underpin the industry. In many cases, students and young adults already have an enduring fascination with aviation and even now understand their academic and skills-development paths.
However, are career development practitioners ready to engage in well-informed conversations with those who have preselected their career pathway? Can they determine who is likely to succeed in these careers and provide appropriate guidance?
Aviation’s Expanding Talent Needs
On the other hand, some opportunities in aviation occasionally fly under the radar and do not appear to be explicitly linked to the industry outright. Aviation is a sector that strongly embraces contemporary technology and is future-oriented. Emerging priorities such as environmental accountability, artificial intelligence, drones, and advanced air mobility are reshaping the industry; therefore, job seekers with nuanced skills in sustainability, data analytics, and engineering will see greater demand.
Are we having conversations and making the connections between these roles and the aviation sector?
Connecting Skills to New Opportunities
Broadening the conversation to include these professions expands the horizons of youth and job seekers. From there, support and continuing education opportunities within the industry position new entrants to develop into future leaders.
Educational institutions (secondary and post-secondary schools), career counsellors, and industry associations all have roles to play in advancing this conversation. Career fairs, site visits to potential workplaces, and strong partnerships between schools and industry associations create valuable opportunities for engagement and career exploration.
Partnerships That Open Doors
We can all work together to address the workforce shortage in aviation. Career professionals can apply their expertise in workforce development and social intelligence to guide youth and job seekers toward careers that align with their interests, skills, and industry demand. All it takes is knowledge sharing and building partnerships to broaden the discussion about the prospects in the sector. AMCO is here to assist you in making connections and offering our guidance.
So, let us continue the dialogue started here today.
Small Conversations, Big Career Possibilities
We envision that these little conversations about entry into the aviation industry will surely lead to big opportunities for youth and those seeking new career pathways.
