Career Professionals of Canada’s Career Development Practitioner (CDP) Certificate Program is aligned to the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs). The CDP-01 and CDP-02 Courses will help you meet the mandatory minimum requirements for Ethics and Theory so that you can pursue your provincial Certified Career Development Practitioner / Professional (CCDP) certification.
What is the CCDP Program?
Across Canada, the Career Development field is evolving and processes are becoming formalized. Career practitioners across the nation have adopted the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs).
The Certified Career Development Professional / Practitioner (CCDP) is under the jurisdiction of provincial/territorial Career Development associations/boards. Practitioners have embraced the need for professionalism in their field by registering with their respective provincial/territorial association and other associations such as Career Professionals of Canada.
Certification defines our scope of practice, supports quality, and ensures accountability.
According to Sareena Hopkins of the Canadian Council for Career Development (CCCD), “Certification raises the bar for our field, demonstrating to our employers, funders, policy makers, and the public that our work is grounded in professional excellence. It operationalizes the competency standards and ethical guidelines that were established through the S&Gs.”
Many provinces have already launched certification programs for Career Development Practitioners (CDPs). Not every province/territory offers CCDP certification. However, some are well established and others are well underway. Currently, certification is mandatory for Career Counsellors in Québec. Voluntary certification for career development practitioners is in place in Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. To be inclusive of established practitioners, provinces have instituted “grandparenting” provisions.
The CCDP is administered provincially through the following associations/boards:
- British Columbia Career Development Association (BCCDA)
- Career Development Association of Alberta (CDAA)
- Career Development Practitioner Certification Board of Ontario (CDPCBO)
- New Brunswick Career Development Action Group (NBCDAG)
- Nova Scotia Career Development Association ( NSCDA)
The base requirement and process for attaining the Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) are not the same for each province. This creates concerns for practitioner mobility and transferability of certification. Through the Canadian Council for Career Development (CCCD), associations continue to work closely to safeguard inclusivity and reciprocity.
The CCDP certifications in all provinces are linked to the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs). Practitioners require the Core Competencies and one or more Areas of Specialization outlined in the S&Gs. Practitioners can display these competencies through a combination of formal education and work experience.
Each province administers its model slightly differently. However, in all cases, you must complete courses in ethics and professional conduct and career development theories at an approved institution.
Career Professionals of Canada has been approved in Ontario for these courses. In other provinces/territories, applicants who have completed CPC’s theory and ethics courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. How are CPC’s certifications different from the CCDP?
Career Professionals of Canada’s certifications are not to be confused with provincial certifications. CPC certifications are a validation of a practitioner’s competency in one of four specific areas: strategic resume writing, employment interview strategy, career transition and employment strategy, and career development strategy.
CPC certification is a validation and credentialing program based on Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). CPC certifications are designed to help these practitioners demonstrate and obtain recognition for learning that they acquired through work and life experience. Those practitioners who have not yet achieved the minimum experience or education required for their CCDP may qualify for a CPC credential. Candidates may complete an application to be credentialed in one or more of four specific areas:
- Certified Resume Strategist (CRS)
- Certified Interview Strategist (CIS)
- Certified Employment Strategist (CES)
- Certified Career Strategist (CCS)
The Certified Career Strategist (CCS) comprises the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs) and covers Career Development Ethics & Standards along with Career Development Theory, Models & Practices. It most closely aligns with the CCDP. Therefore, Certified Career Development Practitioners (CCDP) are automatically eligible to be conferred the Certified Career Strategist (CCS) designation immediately upon application through CPC’s Fast-Track Recognition Program.
